Plantat Refuge (3.130 masl) Trekking

A wonderful high altitude trekking, from beginning to end…!

Plantat Refuge (3,130 masl)

The trekking to the Plantat Refuge is a must in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago. It is located at the bottom of the mythical Cajón del Maipo and at the foot of the majestic San José Volcano (5,856 meters above sea level). To get to this beautiful place, we will take our vehicle to the sector of “El Cabrerío”, a sector that is known for having corrals and shelters for raising goats. From this point begins our adventure and trekking. No more than 1 km away we will arrive at a charming place called “El Valle de la Engorda”, where you can see a blanket of vegetation where cattle feed every summer and in the background you can see the impressive San Jose volcano, which impacts with its beauty and magnitude. You can feel, hear and see the rivers flowing down the mountain. One of them is the Estero Marmolejo, a plentiful river that follows you all the way when you go to the great Cerro Marmolejo and the Estero La Engorda, a small stream that bathes this fertile valley and follows the trail to the wonderful San José Volcano. After walking between large mountains and enjoying this valley of approximately 4 km of distance, we will follow the trail that will take us to a considerable slope through a ravine that will lead us directly to the Plantat Refuge. After the effort comes the reward! We will arrive at the Plantat Refuge (3,130 masl), a small rock construction dating from 1937 (built by Enrique Plantat and his sister) and that welcomes and receives all mountaineers who come to visit it. Arriving at the Plantat Refuge, we can feel and observe the magnitude of the mountains, in the middle of the Andes, the peace, harmony and energy that you feel in this place is unique.  The Plantat Refuge marks the base camp for an eventual ascent to the San Jose volcano and is an ideal high altitude trekking for acclimatization.

We invite you to enjoy a high altitude trekking at the bottom of the great San José Volcano!
